Automated Alloy Pipe Cutting for Sandvik

2015 3D System Design & Process Concept Model

1. Executive Summary

In 2015, global materials leader Sandvik required an industrial-grade, automated cutting solution designed specifically for processing high-hardness alloy and thick-walled steel tubing. Conventional circular cold saws caused rapid blade wear, tooth chipping, and surface heat distortion.

We engineered a fully enclosed, high-rigidity abrasive cut-off cell featuring active negative-pressure dust extraction, dual adjacent clamping, and low-friction material handling—delivering superior cut squareness, reduced cycle times, and clean workshop operation.

2. Engineering Challenges & Customer Requirements

Difficult-to-Cut Superalloys & Thick-Walled Tubing

  • High mechanical hardness and work-hardening tendencies caused frequent tool damage on standard carbide-tipped blades, creating downtime and high tooling costs.

Strict End-Face Perpendicularity & Burr Control

  • Downstream applications required clean, square cuts with minimal heat distortion, eliminating secondary machining and deburring stages.

Hazardous Dust & Spark Management Standards

  • High-speed abrasive grinding generates high-temperature spark sprays and fine metallic dust. The workstation required compliance with strict European EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) containment standards.

Continuous In-Line Cycle Synchronization

  • Seamless integration with upstream tube delivery and downstream finishing systems without tube surface scratching or material jamming.

Dual-Side Zero-Clearance Clamping

  • Self-centering pneumatic/hydraulic vertical clamp fixtures positioned immediately adjacent to both sides of the cutting plane prevent pipe vibration, deflection, and pinching, ensuring consistent perpendicular cut faces.

Enclosed Negative-Pressure Containment & Spark Funneling

  • A sealed enclosure featuring an overhead high-velocity dust collection port actively draws ≥98% of airborne particulates and spark streams into dedicated filtration channels, keeping the ambient workspace clean.

Non-Marking Modular V-Roller Conveyors

  • Adjustable wear-resistant infeed and outfeed V-roller assemblies eliminate surface scratches, supporting continuous feeding of long, heavy alloy pipe sections.

4. Next-Generation Evolution (2025 & Beyond)

"Building upon proven heavy-duty cutting principles engineered for Sandvik, our latest generation of automated tube cutting systems features refined aesthetics, advanced servo-driven feed axes, smart HMI monitoring, and even higher dust collection efficiency."
